I will be providing a workshop titled Trauma-Awareness in Modern Polytheism: Foundations for Inclusive and Resilient Spiritual Communities. I am providing this presentation in an updated, interactive format, to include discussion about the impact of silence and shame in the aftermath of religious trauma. My abstract is included below:
Ninety percent of people will experience at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. It is likely that one-third of adults have experienced religious trauma. This session examines the prevalence of trauma within modern polytheist communities, the isolating impact of shame in the aftermath of that trauma, and the effects of communal silence within these communities. Drawing on evidence-based research, clinical expertise, and lived experience, Izzy Swanson will analyze how trauma shapes community participation, leadership, and ritual practice. The session presents a framework for identifying trauma responses and understanding their effects on inclusion and safety. It also considers how community norms and leadership may perpetuate or challenge exclusion. Participants will receive practical guidance for developing trauma-conscious devotional practices, rituals, and community policies. Strategies will be offered to minimize re-traumatization and foster environments of psychological safety, inclusion, and collective resilience.
The conference is set up in a hybrid format. You will be able to attend online if you cannot attend in person.
